Gender Wage Gap In Nigeria? How Real Is It?

Around the world, women are generally found to be paid less than men for the same work done.

In Nigeria, statistics from the World Gender Gap report 2022 reveals that Nigeria ranks 123rd with a score of 0.639 out of a total of 146 countries. This figure is a stark reality of where Nigeria stands regarding the gender wage gap.

Gender Wage Gap is defined as the average difference between the financial compensation received by men and women for working. Gender wage gap is

defined by the World Economic Forum (WEF) as the difference between average male and female wages, divided by the average male wage.

Generally, the gender wage gap is rooted in gender inequality. Despite the increasing participation of women in the labor force, a significant wage gap still exists in different industries and sectors. This problem is further compounded by gender stereotypes prevailing in the society.

Most often than not, girls are often steered towards gender-normative careers. This happens from a young age, where society, parents, and guardians places a ceiling on the career choices of the girl-child.

In many communities and homes in Nigeria, girls venturing into STEM based fields are frowned upon and discouraged.

Some parents outrightly forbid their daughter’s interests in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM) fields, with the irrational explanation that funding such interests is a waste of time and resources. After all, the girl child will end up in the home, taking care of the family, they say.

This stereotype has hindered many girls from pursuing their dreams, making them settle for something more normal. However, it should be noted that boys are exempted from this stereotype. Boys are generally expected to pursue careers in STEM based fields and other top paying professions.

Eradicating gender stereotypes will do a lot in closing the gender wage gap in Nigeria and other African countries. Girls should have the liberty to pursue careers of their choice and should be provided with the resources they need.

With more women becoming breadwinners and heads of households in Nigeria, the prevalent gender wage gap threatens the economic capacity of women.

Concerted effort should be taken by individuals, parents, NGOs, private companies and the government to ensure that women are not discriminated against in the labor market.  Pay equity should be promoted and appropriate laws put in place by the government in this regard.

Equal opportunities should also be provided for women at every point of their education, training, and career choices.

At Women Impacting Nigeria, we help women kickstart a career in tech through our Tech Sis Program. We also help women and girls acquire digital skills, soft skills, easily transition to tech, access job placements and internship opportunities.

We believe that women are entitled to receive ‘Same Pay for Same Work Done’ as their female counterparts. We continue to stand for gender equality and we welcome support from like-minded individuals and organizations in the achievement of a gender equitable Nigeria.

How Tope Imasekha Is Empowering Small Business Successes For Women

The founder of Women Impacting Nigeria,

Tope Imasekha, was recently featured by Amaka Studio for her role in empowering women owned businesses in Nigeria.

Tope Imasekha, through Women Impacting Nigeria has been facilitating financial inclusion and autonomy in Nigeria. Through her Widows Empowerment Initiative, Tope has empowered many widows and vulnerable women in Nigeria with grants to scale their businesses.

Her WEP Initiative has also equipped widows with financial and digital literacy skills. The target of this initiative are vulnerable women from low income communities who run small and medium scale businesses.

In 2022, the Widow’s Empowerment Program (WEP), was targeted at widows and vulnerable women living at Mende, Cane Village, Maryland.

WIN’s Research and Development team discovered a community of cane weaving women who operate their cane weaving business on a small scale as a result of lack of access to financial products to grow their businesses.

A financial literacy training was held for these women and five of them were awarded business grants.

Just recently, on the 26th of August, the 2023 edition of this initiative was held in Shomolu, Bariga Lagos, in partnership with Beatrice Ado Kola-Balogun Foundation.

Tope remains committed to closing the gender gap in Nigeria by facilitating greater financial inclusion for vulnerable women and girls. Her passion is supported by like minded individuals, organizations and groups such as Beatrice Ado Kola-Balogun Foundation.

Gender Advocacy Walk With COPESA https://womenimpactingnigeria.org/gender-advocacy-walk-with-copesa/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=gender-advocacy-walk-with-copesa Thu, 11 May 2023 12:55:45 +0000 https://womenimpactingnigeria.org/?p=23032 To further advance the cause of women and girls in Nigeria, Women Impacting Nigeria held a Gender Advocacy Walk in partnership with COPESA (Community Participation and Empowerment Scheme Augmentation).

This event took place on Thursday May 11, 2023 and brought together local households, civil societies and global stakeholders for the joint collaboration of the SDGs implementation in Africa, particularly on creating awareness on women and girls’ rights.

Beginning with a sensitization talk at the Abesan entrance gate, Mosan Okunola LCDA, Alimosho, the gender advocacy procession went round the entire community, and ended at the Abesan Youth Centre.

Over 250 people participated in the gender advocacy walk, including a significant number of Abesan community members. The walk also attracted students from Fesbach College Abesan and Dee Unique College Abesan, who came in their numbers to learn and participate.

This program is in line with SDG 5, (Gender Equality), which we believe is fundamental to the achievement of other Sustainable Development Goals in Nigeria.

A lecture on the importance of the SDGs was given at the event, with a focus on community participation for national building and elimination of gender based violence.

Other noteworthy organizations such as GLOHWOC and FIDA (International Federation of Women Lawyers) participated at this event, including volunteers and members of WIN’s community.

At WIN, gender equality is at the center of everything we do. We also recognize that enlightening the society and enlisting their participation to promote gender equality is key to the achievement of SDG 5.

With community involvement such as this, Nigeria will be on its way to seeing the SDG goal 5 fulfilled, one community at a time.
